The Mountain and its Wind Swept Hat

The Mountain and its Wind Swept Hat

January 13, 2008 | Mount Rainier National Park

The mountain commonly has its hat or halo trailing behind or above it. It's actually a lenticular cloud - a crazy effect that is caused by moist air at low elevations be forced upward over the mountain.

This shot was taken as we were driving back from Paradise. Quite a view even when you're nearly below the snow line.
