Willow Ptarmigan

Willow Ptarmigan

August 22, 2009 | Denali National Park

A Willow Ptarmigan keeps an eye on me as I spy her on a rocky hillside. This is mother of a brood we stumbled upon. Their feather patterns are so great that we didn't even notice them until we were within feet of them and that was only because of their clucking.

The Ptarmigan is a resilient bird, living year-round in the park.
